Blog Post 6 - It's Showtime
The most important thing I learned about this process is "always buy the right tools." My father in law always tells me to buy the tools instead of borrowing because I will use them again. I didn't think this was going to be the case until I started this genius hour project. In the past I would try and figure out a cheaper or free solution to a home project, but now that I am a regular at Home Depot I buy the tools instead with future uses in mind.
If you asked my wife what it is like watching me try and fix things around the home she would respond with, "It is painful to watch Dan fix things around the house, he has little experience and gets frustrated very easily."
Knowing that is how my biggest fan feels about me doing things around the home motivated me to improve. My plan was to use technology (YouTube and DIY sites) as learning tools and other DIYers as a support group to bounce ideas and ask for help.

Another important thing I have learned through this Genius Hour project is using the experts for help when needed. My brother in law is very good at home projects and only lives about 10 minutes away from me. His home he bought needed a lot of work done to it and he learns how to do the projects himself. His help with the bunk bed and back door was a bonding experiences and learning for me. I hope we can connect in the future with projects at my home or his.
Did I reach my end product? Hell yes I have! I started out not having the correct tools and the patience of a 3 year old with doing projects around the home. Now I am building bunk beds, installing doors, mounting TVs and installing thermostats. My home is already benefiting from this in just energy savings, which makes me happy! So with some deep breathes and a lot of time on the internet researching how to's, I realize I can be successful with home projects!

So awesome to read about your journey, Dan! You had such a good idea for a project! It's going to continue to be so helpful in the future for you to be able to fix things around the house and you'll have the satisfaction of knowing that you did it all yourself. Congratulations!!
